The Magic of Music Recitals: Why Every Music Student Should Take the Stage!

July 5, 2023 Hannah Mortensen

Whether you're a budding pianist, or a passionate violinist, participating in recitals can be a game-changer for your musical journey. So, let's explore the fantastic benefits of taking the stage and embracing the magic of music recitals!

Building Confidence
Recitals provide an exceptional platform for music students to showcase their skills and talent. And guess what? Every time you step onto that stage, you're conquering your fears and building confidence. Overcoming stage fright can be a challenge, but as you perform more frequently, you'll notice an incredible growth in your self-assurance. Plus, the applause and encouragement from the audience only add to the positive vibes!

Developing Performance Skills
Playing music in the comfort of your practice room is fantastic, but nothing compares to the thrill of performing in front of a live audience. Recitals offer a unique opportunity to refine your performance skills. The more you perform, the better you become at captivating your audience and conveying the emotions embedded within your melodies. Performing at recitals prepares you for other performance opportunities along your musical journey, such as playing for family and friends and at parties. If you love performing you might even eventually want to play at professional events like weddings, or branch out and even play with musical groups. Performance is a valuable skill to develop.

Enhancing Musical Proficiency
Recitals serve as milestones in your musical journey, pushing you to elevate your skills to new heights. The process of preparing for a performance requires dedicated practice, attention to detail, and a deeper understanding of the music you're playing. Through this preparation, you'll develop a stronger command over your instrument, improve your technique, and unleash your full potential as a musician.

Expanding Repertoire
Recitals inspire you to explore a diverse range of musical pieces. As you strive to create a captivating program, you'll discover hidden gems and musical styles that you may have never encountered before. This exposure to different genres and composers broadens your musical horizons, making you a more versatile and well-rounded musician.

Fostering Community and Support
Recitals are not just about showcasing your talent; they're also about connecting with fellow musicians, teachers, and a supportive audience. Sharing your music in a communal setting creates a sense of belonging and camaraderie. You'll find yourself surrounded by like-minded individuals who share your passion for music, providing invaluable encouragement and inspiration along the way.

Celebrating Achievements
Recitals are a celebration of your musical achievements. They provide an opportunity to reflect on your progress, acknowledge how far you've come, and set new goals for the future. The excitement of performing and receiving recognition for your hard work brings a sense of fulfillment and motivation to continue pursuing your musical dreams.

Let the music guide you, and let the applause fuel your passion for creating something truly extraordinary!

In-Person or Online Lessons? Which one is right for you?

June 20, 2023 Hannah Mortensen

If you’re thinking about music lessons you might be wondering whether in-person or online lessons are the way to go. Both options have their pros and cons, and ultimately the choice comes down to what works best for you!

Here are some things to consider when deciding between in-person or online lessons.

Benefits of in-person music lessons

  • Personal interaction: Being in the same room as your teacher allows for a more immersive, hands-on experience, where you can learn not only through instruction, but also by observing and mimicking your teacher’s movements and techniques. You’ll also get immediate feedback and correction which can be incredibly helpful for improving your skills.

  • Reduced distractions: At your teacher’s music studio there are fewer distractions compared to learning at home, or online. This can help students stay more focused and engaged in their lessons. A consistent atmosphere creates a better quality music education.

  • Access to resources: At your teacher’s music studio you’ll have access to a wide range of resources, such as sheet music, recordings, and other learning materials that students may not have at home.

Benefits of online music lessons

  • Convenience: Online music lessons offer the flexibility to learn from anywhere with an internet connection, which can be especially convenient for busy students or those who live far from one of our music studios.

  • Time-Saving: Since student’s don’t have to travel to a physical location for their lessons, they can save time and often fit more lessons into their schedule.

  • Comfortable learning environment: Learning from the comfort of one’s own home can help students feel more relaxed and at ease, which can lead to better learning outcomes.

  • Cost-effective: Online lessons are more affordable than in-studio lessons!

Which option is right for you?

Ultimately, the choice between in-studio and online music lessons comes down to personal preference, and what works best for your individual needs and circumstances. Regardless of which option you choose, the most important thing is to find a teacher who is skilled, experienced, and passionate about music, and who you can connect with so you can achieve your musical goals.

If you aren’t sure, you can always contact us and we can help you choose and option that would work best for you.

Everything is moving online these days, including my music lessons!

At first I thought this would be a temporary thing but now that I’ve been doing them for the past couple of weeks I’ve decided to offer them as part of my regular lessons from now on!

I’ve actually taken online violin lessons myself! A couple of years ago my violin moved to Toronto , and rather than finding a new teacher we decided to try online lessons. The lessons went extremely well! In fact, they went so well that we continued doing online lessons for two years. I even prepared for my Royal Conservatory Grade 6 exam over these online lessons, and was very successful with my exam.

I would highly recommend them for anyone who is looking for a different option. Of course, right now with social distancing they are a great alternative if your current music teacher has stopped doing lessons. They are also a great option if you have babies and find that it’s difficult to get out of the house with your older children and take them to in-studio lessons. They are also great for home schooled students, and for seniors.

If you are interested in trying out online lessons I offer free meet and greets.
